HORUS/MAAT LODGE F.A.Q.
WHAT IS THE HORUS/MAAT LODGE?
The foundation of the Horus/Maat Lodge took place on the New Moon of April 26th of 1979, at a gathering of Soror Nema and the members of the Grove of the Star & the Snake. Our goal was to form a loose constellation of Thelemic Mages devoted to spreading the evolutionary energies of the Double Current 93/696, as free as possible from the type of authoritarian hierarchy that is so common in occult organizations.
Self-initiation was encouraged, as we realized that all initiation is essentially individual, personal, sometimes random, mysterious, and impossible to categorize or define for others. We sought to make freely available a Way of Magick that we have found to be more effective than any other contemporary system or non-system. Our symbol is a red triangle pointed downwards, marked with a black feather of flame in the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic style.
Those with a very wide range of backgrounds have been drawn to form a link with us. Out of the chaos of magick, wicca, tantra, alchemy, science, taoism, art, voudon, yoga, shamanism, astrology, politics, religion, surrealism, history, physics, psychology, or hermetic philosophy we have found that the multitude of selves we all carry within us can be joined in a more universal Self. Out of the Memory of the World arise the Gods of every land and time to join with us. The future opens.
A fair number joined with us in the first few years, while various gatherings such as the Warrior-Lord Working and the Convocation of the Magi took place. On the Outer the HML then entered a latent period that ended when Frater Aion took all our original writings and created a new and expanding website for us at www.horusmaat.com. The Internet has now provided a means of communication to connect a very remarkable and international variety of people from diverse areas and traditions. Over the years we have made both loose and formal connections with such groups as the Bate Cabal, Q.B.L.H., O.A.I., the Order ov Chaos, the Invisibles, various O.T.O.s and covens, and even more secretive cells. Many of us are solitary, or work with a few close friends.
In practical terms the Lodge exists largely in cyberspace in the form of the HML List now hosted by Frater Aleph, wherein we have gathered to share insight and play. In the original outline of our structure we proposed both active (RHK) and inactive (HPK) members, which has proven eerily prophetic of the number of silent lurkers thereupon. The only rule we have imposed is Mutual Respect, which essentially has meant a no-flaming requirement. All we ask is that if you want to fight, please do so off-list, as this is in a sense our communal and sacred space. Those of us who have noticed how boring, destructive and pointless such activities have been on other lists may well understand this single policy. We also request that you do not forward any material from the List without the author's permission. There is a members-only Archive of our several years of activity.
Group magical activities have also
importance, in particular the Eleven Star Working and gathering on the
astral plane in the Moonbase Temple.
WHAT IS THE DOUBLE CURRENT?
The Double Current is woven of twin strands of magical time and technique.
The 93 Current began with Frater
reception of Liber AL vel Legis: The Book of the Law in 1904. Aleister
Crowley is the transformative figure of modern magick: emerging from
qabalistic and hermetic tradition of the Golden Dawn, he progressed
various schools of eastern thought and eventually created a remarkable
synthesis of techniques under the banner of "The Method of Science, the
Goal of Religion". The revelation he received was of a quantum
centered upon the Force & Fire of the Egyptian god Horus, an
of solar consciousness
for the liberation of humanity, of revolution and breaking down of obsolete structures.
This is Balanced by the 696 Current, sparked by Soror Nema's 1974 experience of Liber Pennae Praenumbra: The Book of the Foreshadowing of the Feather, which expresses the words of Maat the goddess of Justice & Truth. While the power of Horus is one of expansion and brilliance, that of Maat is of insight and mystery. As Yang & Yin, Androgyne & Gynander, these Twins transform the two-sided Tree of Life & Death for the Next Step in evolution, leading eventually towards N'Aton, the collective global mind of awakened humanity. In practice we have found that the magicks of Horus are often catalyzed and accelerated by those of Maat, forming a synergy of illumination and mutation. The Word of Horus is ABRAHADABRA, and that of Maat is IPSOS.
These energies are all based in the
of the Procession of Aeons: rising out of the Nameless Aeon of our
and shamanic past are four periods of historic development. The age of
Isis the Mother was of paganism and nature, and that of Osiris the
of monotheism and the rise of cities. The corruption at the end of this
period is now being overthrown by the new energies of Horus the Son,
modern era of anarchy and chaos and technological changes. This will in
turn become the time of the Daughter Maat, whose way of being will
in unique and unexpected ways. Part of her magick involves the reversal
of time, as the forward flow of Horus meets the backwards current of
inspiring us with an understanding of the future Wordless Aeon, when we
all may become something far greater, something which exists in the
of seeds within us in the eternal Now. Part of the Art of Magick is
to the use of the
formulas of any of these periods at Will; as the Greek philosopher Herakleitos stated around 500 BCE: "The Aeon is a Child at Play". We seek to apply these energies toward the evolution, enlightenment, and survival of our World today.
WHAT IS THE HGA? WHO IS N'ATON?
Another of the central concepts of post-modern magick is that of the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel, who first appears in ancient times as the Greek Daimon or Roman Genius. In the West the first description appears in a Grimoire called The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abra-Melim the Mage, and this has been greatly expanded upon by Aleister Crowley and others. At the root of Crowley's understanding is the True Will unique to every individual, and the visionary quest to discover it. In making the High Art of Magick truly personal, we explore the unfolding of this Spirit, a process that opens many questions: is this truly the Self, or is it the Other? What link can be formed between the Soul and God? Is this Self we experience universal and eternal, or limited to a single lifetime? Why the hell are we here, and what in heaven's name can we do about it?
In the 93 current the cardinal ritual
contact is Liber Samekh, commonly known as the Invocation of the
One. In the 696 current the essential tool is the Mirror, which should
be upon every member's altar. If you are not engaged in this aspect of
the Great Work of Alchemical Change, then perhaps you should be, for it
creates a field of synchronicity and insight highly conducive to

One of the core concepts of Maatian magick is N'Aton, the collective and awakened consciousness of future humanity. Ultimately this may be said to include the ancestral dead in the past, all of the living, and our unborn descendents to come. We may perhaps step free from time and exist in this eternal moment, for we all carry the seeds of N'Aton within us. For many of us the HGA has been seen as an embryonic or fully realized form of N'Aton, a realization that tends to accelerate the process.

you, I guess the most precise one for N'Aton is the Maat wand he/she

WHAT IS THE ELEVENSTAR WORKING?
Transmitted by Soror Nema, the Eleven Star Ritual can be found on the Lodge website at www.horusmaat.com. Briefly, it involves the assumption of a Throne in one of the eleven planetary spheres of the Wheel of Life for the period of one year. The zone selected is usually chosen as appropriate by one's personal feelings at a given time, and like all Maatian magick tends to accelerate the development, initiations, and ordeals of the individual. While such a commitment should not be undertaken lightly, it should not be feared either. It serves to focus and express one's evolution and individuation, to be a catalyst for transformation and art.
Participants generally interweave this ritual with their own customary and regular practices, and endeavor to be as creative and improvisational as possible. Perhaps here is as good a place as any to mention the paradigm of Chaos Magick, which closely parallels many of our methods and is a major influence upon many of our members. Begun as an attempt to strip away historical and symbolic accretions from occultism, it digests the techniques of sorcery down to their essential forms, and thus formulates one of the clearest models of the esoteric process. Faced with the complexities of such systems as the Golden Dawn, it expounds a revolutionary simplicity by comparison. As we all draw upon so many cultures and times in our understanding of things, it is good to remember that magicians practice an Art, and witches a Craft: rote learning can never be as effective as a freely creative process.
Those involved in this process perform
rituals on the night of each New Moon and then gather in the Moonbase
as well. As a rule there is often discussion of possible themes on the
list beforehand, and recently these have tended towards working for
peace or healing or insight.

WHAT IS THE MOONBASE TEMPLE?
This was Soror Nema's original description of our secret temple, which is located in a crater on the face of the Moon and in the fertile psyches of the Lodge:
"Standing with other boulders near a
ring wall is a gray-buff boulder about 10' tall, with a cleft in its
We enter through this cleft and descend a flight of stairs cut into the
rock. These lead to a tunnel that bends to the right, then opens
into a large round, domed chamber filled with light and energy that
and sings. The ceiling,
walls, floor and objects are of a luminescent stone.
"The chamber's close to the surface, and the floor tilts slightly toward a doorway in the far wall. In the center of the chamber is a table; on either side of the table are two freestanding pillars. On the table is a figurine both feline and female, and a set of elemental Magickal tools.
"The opening in the far side of the chamber leads to a long dark tunnel that opens into a second chamber, egg-shaped. Right beneath the apex of the ceiling is a cloud of crystals, rapidly dancing, sparkling, singing and swarming around each other. Directly under the crystals is a deep pool of water, with a catwalk around it. This pool is the Magick Mirror."
As this Moongate has been visited by
members it has constantly mutated and evolved in response to individual
visionary experience. The feline figure has developed into a pair of
guardian sphinxes; the main chamber often seems to contain a ring of
thrones around the edge of the catwalk; the scrying pool has become a
marsh-land with a lens of clear water at the center; many doors to
chambers appear and link to the astral temples of Lodge members.

WHAT IS THE RECOMMENDED READING?
Magick is a very large field indeed, and part of the quest involves finding the Self in the most unusual places. In my opinion these are some of the best, and are generally still in print. I strongly recommend that you begin and end with the Tao Te Ching, but we should not forget other classics like the Dhammapada, Bhagavad-Gita, Bible or Koran.
Crowley is in many ways a vast structure of interwoven writings supporting a few very good ideas. Drawn into any of his works, one may find oneself led to others. The true essentials are perhaps his Magick (In Theory & Practice), Gems From The Equinox, The Holy Books of Thelema, The Vision & The Voice, 777, and The Book Of Thoth with its accompanying Thoth Tarot deck. The Book of Lies, Wisdom Or Folly, and Magick Without Tears restore my faith in his sense of humor when his vast ego becomes annoying. The Magick of Thelema by Lon Milo Duquette can be a very useful starting place, as it introduces and collects the main ritual practices as well as the essential Liber AL vel Legis: The Book of the Law.
The core of the 696 Current is in Nema's Maat Magick, which includes Liber Pennae Praenumbra: The Book of the Foreshadowing of the Feather and some of the most potent magical rites ever written. Her new book The Way of Mystery: Magick, Mysticism & Self-Transcendence has just been published.
Great books in the occult revival include Cosmic Trigger and Prometheus Rising and anything else by Robert Anton Wilson, Global Ritualism by Denny Sargent, Visual Magick and others by Jan Fries, Real Magick by Isaac Bonewitz, Modern Magick by Donald Michael Kraig, and The Magician's Companion by Bill Whitcomb. Other important writers in the modern revival include Kenneth Grant and Austin Osman Spare, Jack Parsons and Frater Achad, Andrew Chumbley and Stephen Mace; you may find their works more difficult to track down but all are well worth the effort.
Chaos Magick is found in Liber Null & Psychonaut and Liber Kaos by Pete Carroll, and Condensed Chaos and Prime Chaos by Phil Hine. Again, there are more excellent authors in this area such as Ray Sherwin, Steve Wilson, Dave Lee, and Nick Hall, whose small-press British editions are also harder to find. For those inclined to sexual magicks Demons of the Flesh: The Complete Guide to Left Hand Path Sex Magic by Nicholas and Zeena Schreck, Secrets of Sex Magick by Frater U.D., Modern Sex Magick by Donald Michael Kraig, and Sexual Alchemy by Donald Tyson have their moments. So do Carlos Castaneda, H.P. Lovecraft, and Don Webb. There are countless other titles and journals which you may find useful in your adventures, as well as the essential study of the world's great cultural mythologies: Egyptian and Greek, Norse and Celtic, Asian (Tantrika/Tantra, Taoism, Buddhism, Shinto...), African, American, Australian, or wherever may call to you.
Almost all of the writings of Crowley and Spare, and a vast number of other magical resources, are available upon the Internet. Your local public library can be very useful. If we need a political statement, I nominate T.A.Z. The Temporary Autonomous Zone, Ontological Anarchy, Poetic Terrorism by Hakim Bey.
It can also be noted that several of
members are authors and, of course, their works embody these ideals and
explore a number of topics of interest to the HML in detail. An
of the links page on the HML site will offer more details: http://www.horusmaat.com.
